Paintings of Admonition

Paintings were frequently used to educate illiterate women in high status. Since women were not allowed to learn Chinese letters, the book of virtuous behaviors with illustrations and Hangul explanations were published to help them to understand the context.

Samgang haengsildo was published during King Seojong when he heard the story about Kim Hwa from Jinju province, who murdered her father. Looking at the collapse of “the Three Bonds and Five Relationships”, the King decided to publish a book to teach the virtues and principles of Confucianism. After the publication of the book Samgang haengsildo, other books such as Ommun Samgang haengsildo, and Onhae Samgang haengsildo, and Tongguk singok Samgang haengsildo, Oryun haengsildo were published for the same purpose to people in all the regions in Korea.

King Chungjong and Queen Sohye were also interested in didactic books to educate men and women in Chosun Dynasty. Especially the Queen Sohye, who had as much knowledge in many areas like high-class men at that time, she wrote a book “Naehun” to emphasize the significance of woman as a good mother and wise wife.
