Because Joseon was a Confucian society, its people stressed the importance of respecting one’s roots and ancestors. Thus, the ancestor ritual was such as huge event, and thus the portrait paintings became popular during the ceremonial process. Sometimes, it is true that the ancestors were deified by the paintings,as time passed by. That’s the reason why many portraits paintings were produced in Chosun Dynasty. The famous and skillful artists met great people of the time.
